Resources for Teaching English in Korea, China, or Another Country

If you are teaching English to native Spanish speakers, you have a very large selection of teachers resources for Spanish and ESL.  But there is not so much for everyone else.  Since I have a daughter teaching English in Korea, I tend to take note when I see books for the English Language Learner, no matter what the original language is.  The latest find is put out by Weekly Reader Publications, and is geared for “struggling or striving readers” in grades 2-8.  These books are called Leveled Reading for ELL, and this two-part set offers Level A and Level B.  Each of the 48 lessons has a reading selection, with levels from 2.0 to 3.2.

Egypt History Project: Make a Pyramid out of Sugar Cubes!

When teaching Ancient Egypt for elementary kids, a great Egypt History Project is to have them Make a Pyramid out of Sugar Cubes!  The kids love this project, and you don’t have to do much preparation.  Just be sure to warn them that this is not to eat!!  Also, be sure to use Tacky Glue, since Elmer’s or another school glue will “melt” the sugar cubes.  Find more Ancient Egypt History Project ideas here!

One of the best sources for easy, hands-on social studies activities is the History Pockets series of books.  These books provide hands-on history activities without much planning or preparation for the teacher.  Each title in the series is packed with projects on one historical time period or theme, which you can photocopy for every student.  Best of all, most of the completed projects are flat so they can be stored in the students’ History Notebooks.  The series consists of several titles for Grades 1-3, and then more titles for Grades 4-6.

Each book divides its topic into several specific areas, such as Daily Life, Government, Religion, etc.  In each of these areas you will find several projects that will fit into a “Pocket” made from folded construction paper.  The pockets are then hole-punched and bound together with string or ribbon to create a Pocket Book.

Each book in this series is about 100 pages long, and most of those pages are meant to be photocopied, giving you lots of activities to choose from.  To give you a specific example, the Greek book has instructions for 9 separate Pockets, each with several activities on a different theme of  Ancient Greece, such as Daily Life, Religion, Military Power, Art &  Architecture, Government, Sports & Entertainment, and more.

If you are looking for social studies activities for your classroom, you will want to check out the History Pockets books.  The books give a wide selection of creative projects for your students and will save you from excessive preparation time.   This is a resource you will want to add to your history lesson plans.
