Women Heroes of World War II

Women Heroes of World War II doesn’t just give us dramatic tales of women who risked their lives for others.  It also reaffirms the fact that ordinary people are capable of doing extraordinary things.  Each story introduces a woman with courage who braved personal danger to help others during the war.  Outside of Marlene Dietrich, and possibly Josephine Baker and Corrie Ten Boom, the women are not familiar names.  Most never achieved any amount of fame in their own lifetime.  But their actions should never be forgotten.  With stories of 26 women covering 8 different countries, this book reveals the courage they had and the impact they made.

The book is organized by country, and each section includes a short review of each country’s involvement in the war.  The back of the book has additional notes and a glossary of terms.  Women Heroes of World War II is appropriate for Junior High to High School reading.

Revolutionary War Historical Fiction

Recently I was asked to review 2 books whose stories revolved around battles of the Revolutionary War.  The first book, Patriots, gives an up-close description of life in Boston during the War and the Patriot and British experiences on Breeds Hill, known to most of us as The Battle of Bunker Hill.  The second book, Gone to Meet the British, picks up the story two years later with 2 of the same characters.  This time the boys are living in rural Massachusetts and are old enough to join the war effort themselves.  They both follow in the footsteps of their fathers and enlist to help the American cause.  The action takes them to the Battle of Bennington and then to Saratoga.  The author gives us a glimpse of these battles in detail, and describes the impact of the war on Colonial New England.

With the main characters as boys, and plenty of battle action, this series is another good choice for all Middle School students, and boys in particular.  Reading the first story is a great way to learn what really happened on Bunker (Breeds) Hill.  The second book shows how the war affected everyone in the colonies at the time, even those who did not live in the major cities, and how widespread the fighting was.

Better yet, the author provides free printable Teacher’s Guides for both books at his website.  Click here to find these Revolutionary War Lesson Plans.

Resources for Teaching English in Korea, China, or Another Country

If you are teaching English to native Spanish speakers, you have a very large selection of teachers resources for Spanish and ESL.  But there is not so much for everyone else.  Since I have a daughter teaching English in Korea, I tend to take note when I see books for the English Language Learner, no matter what the original language is.  The latest find is put out by Weekly Reader Publications, and is geared for “struggling or striving readers” in grades 2-8.  These books are called Leveled Reading for ELL, and this two-part set offers Level A and Level B.  Each of the 48 lessons has a reading selection, with levels from 2.0 to 3.2.

To see a full description or to download instantly as an ebook, click here for Leveled Reading for ELL Level A, or click here for Leveled Reading for ELL Level B.

Egypt History Project: Make a Pyramid out of Sugar Cubes!

When teaching Ancient Egypt for elementary kids, a great Egypt History Project is to have them Make a Pyramid out of Sugar Cubes!  The kids love this project, and you don’t have to do much preparation.  Just be sure to warn them that this is not to eat!!  Also, be sure to use Tacky Glue, since Elmer’s or another school glue will “melt” the sugar cubes.  Find more Ancient Egypt History Project ideas here!

History Pockets by Evan Moor

History Pockets: Greece

History Pockets: Greece

One of the best sources for easy, hands-on social studies activities is the History Pockets series of books.  These books provide hands-on history activities without much planning or preparation for the teacher.  Each title in the series is packed with projects on one historical time period or theme, which you can photocopy for every student.  Best of all, most of the completed projects are flat so they can be stored in the students’ History Notebooks.  The series consists of several titles for Grades 1-3, and then more titles for Grades 4-6.

Each book divides its topic into several specific areas, such as Daily Life, Government, Religion, etc.  In each of these areas you will find several projects that will fit into a “Pocket” made from folded construction paper.  The pockets are then hole-punched and bound together with string or ribbon to create a Pocket Book.

Each book in this series is about 100 pages long, and most of those pages are meant to be photocopied, giving you lots of activities to choose from.  To give you a specific example, the Greek book has instructions for 9 separate Pockets, each with several activities on a different theme of  Ancient Greece, such as Daily Life, Religion, Military Power, Art &  Architecture, Government, Sports & Entertainment, and more.

If you are looking for social studies activities for your classroom, you will want to check out the History Pockets books.  The books give a wide selection of creative projects for your students and will save you from excessive preparation time.   This is a resource you will want to add to your history lesson plans.
